The Builders
A little film on Thomas Callahan of Horse Cycles in Andes, NY.
I started a small film project about the people behind the things I’m obsessed with.
Watchmakers, bike builders, the ones making things their own way.
For a long time I was drawn to the objects themselves. Watches, bikes, the small details, the way something feels in your hands. But the more time I’ve spent around them, the more I’ve realized the real story isn’t the object. It’s the person behind it.
There’s something different that happens when you slow down and spend real time with the people making these things. Not just photographing them or passing through, but sitting with them, watching how they work, listening to why they started in the first place. The quiet decisions. The way they choose to do things their own way, even when it would be easier not to.
The ones working just outside the spotlight. The ones doing it because they have to.
This is the first film.
Over the next couple of months I’ll be working on four more, spending time with independent watchmakers and a few bicycle builders here in New York City and down in Nashville. I don’t fully know what this turns into yet, and I am excited for that.
If you have suggestions of people doing interesting work, I’d love to hear them. If nothing else, it’s a good excuse for a conversation. More conversations in 2026!
